History of Violence (2005)

June 30, 2007 at 7:33 pm (Entertainment, Movies, Reviews)

Can you escape your past? and if you managed to .. Can your past hunts you?

‘ Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is a pillar of a small town community who runs a diner and lives a happy and quiet life with his wife (Maria Bello) and two children. But their lives are forever changed when Stall thwarts an attempted robbery and is lauded as a hero by the media, attracting the attention of some mobsters (William Hurt, Ed Harris) who believe he is someone else.’… From Tribute.ca

The movie starts with 2 outlaws, who prey on the weak and would do anything for money’s sake and for a piece of action. 2 characters that you would hate/despise and wouldn’t care about.. Turning to Tom’s family,, It starts like a dream , the American dream, where everything is lovely and sweet, the old Cliched romance and family life which can be irritating sometimes. I found the story interesting form different angles… Both Protagonists and villains angles. The only problem that I had with the movies is the fact that it seemed dubbed although it’s an english movie ,,, I wouldn’t mind if I’m watching a Japanese movie with an english track ,,, but with an english track that seems out of order ,, I wasn’t satisfied. I admired Viggo’s act, the way he’s eyes were telling a lot and the transition between different scenes ,, He differently deserved that Oscar’s nomination … Ed Harris as always was enjoyable to watch..

The soundtrack was OK. with few tracks that I enjoyed. I think the reason with the slow pacing soundtrack is the fact that the movie was annoyingly slow sometimes so Action-Thriller ,, you might not like this one if you are not fond of Drama as a genre.

A interesting movie to watch with good twist , David Cronenberg … I finished watching the movie with a question in my mind; Is Violence inherited? … Watch the movie and tell me what you’re answer will be ??

My Verdict: 8/10

Forever Friends …

June 29, 2007 at 10:10 pm (Personal)

After 1 long year, I met with one of my closest friends.. Samia..

I met Samia 3 years ago, in a Girls-Only students’ accommodation. We didn’t talk, we were eating our dinner. She was laughing and joking with another friend ‘Eunice- Whom I deeply miss as well ‘. We were talking about the cleaning habits of the UK population. Eunice brought up the subject as she scanned the article in the newspaper. From there, a bond was formed, a friendship was born and my family was extended by their arrival.

The wonderful moments that I spent with them was unforgettable and inspiring as well. They were there for me. They made life enjoyable with certain boundaries and limits. I’m grateful for for everything they have done for me. How they helped me geting out of my shell and encourage me to be myself. I learnt a lot by being with them. Sometimes, we do have these moments where we become moody and fed up with everything. With both of them … It’s a different story … They are my sisters ..  Sisters that I wish I had, sisters that I would love to share my life experience with and would treasure them for the rest of my life … Love these 2 … Samia & Eunice ..

The Friends’ Ship …

June 27, 2007 at 10:00 pm (Anime, Kuwait)

One of my all time favourites .. Ranin and her search to find ‘Yanboo3 El-7ayat‘ .. I still remember myself sitting with my beloved Dad on the sofa and watching this classic Anime & We still continue our tradition of watching this series every year. Ensha’allah , when I return to Kuwait in July .. we’ll begin the usual routine … I love those old memories..

It’s a shame, that the Cinema’s department in KTV stopped dubbing animes after the Iraqi occupation, they were faithful to the original and the actors were good. Maybe it wasn’t as productive as they thought but what I don’t understand is …Why don’t they show it on TV ?

Protesting against US army fighting in Iraq!!

June 27, 2007 at 7:58 pm (Entertainment, News)

Rosie O’Donnell caused a stir after she posted a picture of her daughter in her blog wearing a bullet belt; that was claimed to be real bullets (Which I doubt). It’s no secret that Rosie is an Anti-War activist, but using her child to prove a point is not ethical. If she want to fight and argue, she has the media and the power to spread her anti-war campaign, so it’s her fight. This is not her child’s fight. The child seems to be under the age of 10 and it’s such a Coward move to drag your own flesh and blood to such a controversy. Will the child services be involved? It will be interesting to see how would they react with a well known celebrity like Rosie ??

Foreigner (Non-Kuwaiti) teachers: Is their rights protected in Kuwait ?

June 24, 2007 at 6:16 pm (academic, Kuwait)

I came across this article in Al-Jareeda Newspaper, It’s 2 weeks old, but what’s written is disastrous. Is it really that bad? I know that tier salary is different from their Kuwaiti colleagues, but as far as I know, They do (The teachers) send a large chunk of the salary to their family in their home country which sometime can reach up to 90% of the salary.  I don’t understand why do they complain? Yes, It can be unfair, but that’s they way in every country (Well, Arab Countries, anyway).

The sad part is that is that they (Well, as the article entioned) try to find another afternoon job to pay the bills, Well, you’re the one who send more than half of your salary and don’t save anything , so it’s your fault !!! Private tutition is everywhere and it’s a business rather than providing a service to students to help them succeed.

What do you think? Is it the Ministry of Education fault? or is it a mistake commited by the teachers because they mis-calculated thier allowance ??

Calories Horror!!!

June 21, 2007 at 1:33 am (Food & Cooking, Kuwait)

Chili’s – Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie

Yahoo.com reported that this dessert contains 1600 calories!!! Considering the fact the Kuwait is so hot now, I assume that restaurant diners won’t be fulfilled without ending their indulgence with fine cold desserts.. Unfortunately, We ‘The consumers’ are not aware of the nutritional details of every single meal that we have outside our home. I’m one of many customers that would love to indulge there selves with a dessert every now and then.. But 1600 calories, 78g fat, 950mg sodium, 215g carbs, 6g fiber and 19g protein is not acceptable. Well, it can be all right if you didn’t eat anything for the day and if you are a man!!! (Just Joking) It’s still not healthy. No doubt the obesity rates are increasing world wide. Hence, the diabetes rates across the globe, as restaurants and even super-market continue to provide us with their special desserts and sauces that we keep coming back for. The sad part is that we; the consumers, are obsessed with anything healthy, or it seems/looks healthy. Low Fat, Healthy, Diet and reduced calories are the magical words for any business that craves for success in the food business. The question is, If you found that your favorite dish is a health risk, would you stop/ try to decrease your consumption and?? and by health risk, I mean something excessive and can be unhealthy. Or will you be one of those who believe that you only live once and you have to enjoy life beyond the limits?

What are you going to choose?

Life and its pleasures with possible dangerous consequences!!! OrHealth that would keep you fit and well with no possible joy and/or guilt of that odd yummy nibble?

A Few Good Men (1992)

June 20, 2007 at 12:49 am (Movies, Reviews)

After a nice quiet night where I watched a comdey (50 First Dates ), I decided to watch one of my all time favourites.

Plot from IMDB.com

‘In this dramatic courtroom thriller, Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise), a Navy lawyer who has never seen the inside of the courtroom, defends two stubborn Marines (Wolfgang Bodison and James Marshall) who have been accused of murdering a colleague. He (Cruise) is known as being lazy and had arranged for a plea bargain. Downey’s (Marshall) Aunt Ginny appoints Cmdr. Galloway (Demi Moore) to represent him. Also on the legal staff is Lt. Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollak). The team rounds up many facts and Kaffee is discovering that he is really cut out for trial work. The defense is originally based upon the fact that PFC Santiago, the victim, was given a “CODE RED”. Santiago was basically a screw-up. At Gitmo, screw-ups aren’t tolerated. Especially by Col. Nathan Jessup (Jack Nicholson).’

As you noticed, the story is complicated. Not the best original story, but the way, it was handled should be commended. An escalating drama that searches for the truth and discuss how can we handle it? Would you condom a behavior or a sort of action that is believed to be heroic but can be seen as brutal as well? The movie stars so many talented actors and on top of the hat; Jack Nicholson. Jack stole all the scenes that he shared with his fellow co-stars; he is such a legend and his breathtaking performance in no exception… I hated him (His Character) but I would want a commander like him as I know that I would sleep peacefully in my bed.Tom Cruise was very good as well; it’s a shame that in his career, a couple of worthy movies can be acknowledged.  I think the pay wasn’t as good as his action flicks. Such a waste, because he can actually act. Demi was gorgeous; her well power and her determination to find the truth made her . I think this is her best movie so far. Many more supporting characters dazzled the screen with their performance starting with David Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland (All 24 fans, know that name), Kevin Pollak then Noah Wyle (From ER), Christopher Guest and so many others well assembled actors.

Would I recommend it? You bet I will.

In summery: Multi talented stars with an interesting plot that won’t let you get bored. A Classic that ought to be seen by any movie enthusiastic. It is adviced to watch these good men with a minimum of 2 scoops of Ice creams.

My Score: 9.5/10  …

50 First Dates (2004)

June 19, 2007 at 3:55 pm (Movies, Reviews)

‘Henry Roth (Sandler) is a veterinarian living in Hawaii who enjoys the company of vacationing women. He leaves the playboy life behind after he falls for Lucy (Barrymore), who suffers from short-term memory loss. Since she can never remember meeting him, Henry has to romance Lucy every single day and hope that she falls for him.’ Plot from: IMDB.comWhat did I expect from this movie? Nothing. I knew Adam’s usual movies are comedies with no plotlines. Although I respect Drew’s due to her versatile choices, not necessary, Oscar-Worthy but at least, I saw growth. I was not expecting anything extraordinary, but I was enjoying my time. The story itself was not strong and there were a few holes here and there. The cast seems to get along very well which is always a plus. Drew and Sandler were good pair not great but easy to watch (For the eyes and the brain). I’m not going to say much about the story but its Adam Sandler movie so you should anticipated what are you watching, as it’s not going to be Drama or action, It’s just pure comedy  …One advice: Don’t pay too much attention to the story line… I don’t remember anything of the soundtrack as it was not memorable.

In Summary, Don’t expect to see a masterpiece but it was such a fun movie to watch something that isn’t heavily handled and to forget about the hardships of reality where you can enjoy the corny happily ever after moments.  A nice movie, that would kill time and for group night out days.

My score: 5.5/10
